Semi-private flights sell you a seat on a small scheduled jet, not the jet itself. You skip the main terminal, check in around 20 minutes before departure and fly a short list of popular city pairs. Fares sit between a good commercial ticket and a full private charter, and for one or two travelers on the right route that middle ground is often the best value in private aviation.
This guide compares the main semi private airlines by aircraft, routes and price, explains the rules that make them work and shows when a charter or a first-class ticket does the job better.
What Semi-Private Flights Are
A semi-private airline operates a small fleet of regional aircraft with far fewer seats than a mainline jet. You book an individual seat online, the way you would on a commercial airline, and the flight leaves on a published schedule. What changes is everything around the flight: a private terminal, a short check-in window and a cabin of 8 to 30 people instead of 150.
Public Charter Rules
Most of these airlines are not airlines in the usual sense. In the United States, 14 CFR Part 380 covers “Public Charter air transportation of passengers in interstate or foreign air transportation.” The rules apply whether a direct air carrier or a public charter operator furnishes the service, and they relieve public charter operators from several provisions of the federal air transportation statute so they can sell seats on aircraft chartered from a direct air carrier. In plain terms, you buy a seat on a charter that is open to the public, and the flight is operated by a certificated carrier behind the scenes.
Private Terminals and the 20-Minute Check-In
Aero states on its own website that you check in curbside 20 minutes before your flight. Press coverage of JSX describes the same idea: flights leave from fixed-base operator terminals, the private aviation terminals that serve business jets, rather than the main terminal. The result is a quicker, quieter airport experience. It is not a different set of laws of physics: you still depend on the weather and air traffic control like everyone else.
Semi-Private vs Shared Charter vs Empty Leg
Three products get confused. A semi-private flight is a scheduled seat that you buy individually. A shared charter pools several travelers onto one chartered aircraft on a route set by the organizer. An empty leg sells the entire aircraft for a repositioning trip at a discount. The first two are bought by the seat; an empty leg is priced per aircraft.
Semi Private Airlines Compared
Several companies sell seats on small aircraft in the United States. SmarterTravel’s 2022 roundup by Peter Thornton covered Aero, Blade, Boutique Air, JSX, Set Jet, Surf Air and Tradewind. JSX is the largest: AirlineGeeks reported in August 2026 that it started the year with 53 aircraft and planned to end it with 64, mixing Embraer E135 and E145 jets on longer routes with ATR 42 turboprops on short hops from Santa Monica. The table uses the most recent source we could open for each airline, with its date. Airlines change routes often, so treat every row as a starting point and check the airline before you plan around it.
| Airline | Aircraft and seats | Main routes | Pets | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JSX | Embraer E135 and E145 jets (30 seats on the regional jets in 2022), ATR 42 turboprops | West Coast, Southwest and Texas, with a few East Coast cities; 2026 additions include LAX to Oakland and Scottsdale and Santa Monica to Napa | Ask the airline | AirlineGeeks, August 2026; Private Jet Card Comparisons, March and May 2026; SmarterTravel, March 2022 |
| Aero | Embraer ERJ 135, 16 seats in a 1-1 layout | Los Angeles (Van Nuys), Aspen, Sun Valley and Los Cabos in 2022; check aero.com for the current route map | Carrier up to 20 x 12 x 9 inches and under 20 lbs, or an extra seat | aero.com, November 2026; SmarterTravel, March 2022 |
| Tradewind | Pilatus PC-12 turboprops and Citation CJ3 jets | White Plains and Teterboro to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, plus Caribbean routes from St. Barths (2022) | Ask the airline | SmarterTravel, March 2022 |
| Surf Air | Pilatus PC-12 turboprops, 8 seats | West Coast and Texas (2022) | Ask the airline | SmarterTravel, March 2022 |
Blade, which sold seats on jets from Westchester to South Florida in 2022, sold its passenger business to Joby Aviation, which completed the deal on August 29, 2025, according to Joby. Check the current Blade schedule before counting on that service.
A few differences matter more than the logo:
- Cabin size. JSX flew 30 seats on its regional jets in 2022, per SmarterTravel. Aero cuts that to 16 in a 1-1 layout, so every seat is a window and an aisle. More space costs more.
- Departure airport. Aero’s Los Angeles flights used Van Nuys, not LAX, per SmarterTravel. That is convenient for the Valley and not for Westside travelers.
- Membership. Some carriers, such as Surf Air and Set Jet, sell monthly memberships on top of fares. Others sell seats with no commitment.
How Much Semi-Private Flights Cost
Fares are dynamic, so any list goes stale. The numbers below are the latest independently reported ones we could open, with their dates. Check the airline for the fare on your day.
Sample Fares, With Dates
JSX is the only carrier with 2026 fares in the press we opened. Private Jet Card Comparisons reported in May 2026 that JSX’s new summer flights from LAX started at $439 one way to Oakland and $494 to Scottsdale, and that a May sale priced Burbank to Las Vegas from $199 each way. For the others, the latest independent figures we found are SmarterTravel’s from March 2022: Aero at $1,600 to $2,300 one way and Tradewind at $200 to $1,000 or more per seat.
| Airline | One-way fare reported | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| JSX | From $199 (Burbank to Las Vegas sale) | May 2026 | Private Jet Card Comparisons |
| JSX | From $439 (LAX to Oakland), $494 (LAX to Scottsdale) | May 2026 | Private Jet Card Comparisons |
| Aero | $1,600 to $2,300 | March 2022 | SmarterTravel |
| Tradewind | $200 to $1,000+ per seat | March 2022 | SmarterTravel |
What Pushes the Price Up
Three things move a semi-private fare: the date, the route and the cabin. Holiday weekends and ski season lift prices sharply. Routes that serve resort towns where commercial service is thin command more. Finally, a 16-seat cabin costs more per seat than a 30-seat one because the same crew and aircraft carry fewer people. Add-ons such as extra bags, changes and priority fees are set by each airline, so read the fare rules before you buy.
Pros and Cons
Pros and cons
Pros
- Short check-in window: Aero says 20 minutes before departure
- No main terminal queue, since the flights leave from private-aviation terminals
- A seat price, not a charter price, on popular city pairs
- Small cabins: 8 to 30 seats
Cons
- Limited city pairs and schedules; a missed flight may mean a long wait for the next one
- Fares can approach or exceed a good commercial ticket on strong dates
- Aircraft are small regional jets or turboprops, not business jets
- Pet, bag and change rules differ by airline and may be stricter than a charter
When to Pick Semi-Private Over Charter or First Class
Solo Travelers and Couples
For one or two people on a route the airline flies, a semi-private seat is hard to beat. You avoid the hassle of a hub airport and pay for two seats, not an aircraft. A commercial first-class fare can still be cheaper on some routes and dates, so price both.
Groups of Four or More
Charter wins when you travel as a group. A charter is priced for the aircraft, so four, six or eight passengers split one bill, and you choose the airport and the time. Run the numbers with our private jet charter cost guide, then compare against four semi-private seats. If a charter is the better fit, a broker can quote both side by side.

If you travel often enough to prepay hours, a card changes the math again: see jet card cost. If you are bringing a dog, our guide to pet-friendly private jet charter covers it; semi-private pet rules differ by airline, as the table shows. Frequently Asked Questions
- Is JSX a private jet?
- Not exactly. JSX is a semi-private airline that sells individual seats on small Embraer regional jets from private-aviation terminals. You do not charter the aircraft, and the cabin is shared with other passengers. It sits between a commercial flight and a private jet charter.
- How much does a JSX flight cost?
- JSX fares in 2026 started at about $199 one way on sale routes such as Burbank to Las Vegas, and at $439 to $494 on new summer flights from LAX, per Private Jet Card Comparisons in May 2026. Prices move by route and date, so check jsx.com for your day. Holiday and peak dates cost more.
- Do you go through TSA on semi-private flights?
- Screening rules depend on the carrier and the airport. Semi-private airlines use private-aviation terminals, where the process is typically quicker than a main terminal. Confirm the airline's current security procedure before your trip, and bring government-issued ID.
- What airlines are like JSX?
- SmarterTravel's 2022 roundup lists Aero, Blade, Boutique Air, Set Jet, Surf Air and Tradewind as similar options. They differ in aircraft, routes and pricing, so compare cabin size, departure airports and baggage rules before you choose one.
- Can you fly semi-private internationally?
- Yes on some routes. Aero lists Los Cabos among its destinations, and Tradewind flew Caribbean routes from St. Barths in SmarterTravel's 2022 roundup. Availability changes with season and airline, so confirm routes and any customs requirements before booking.
