The cheapest way to fly private is almost never the whole-jet charter at the hourly rate. It is a seat on a shared flight, an empty leg that matches your route, or a smaller aircraft flown on flexible dates. This page ranks nine ways to cut the cost, then looks at the cheapest jets to charter and to buy.

The Cheapest Ways to Fly Private

The list starts with options that avoid paying for empty seats or empty flights and ends with ones that trim the bill. Savings depend on route, date and aircraft, so no figure here is a guarantee. Where a company publishes a saving claim, it is attributed. Where nobody publishes one, the saving is described without a number.

1. Empty Legs

An empty leg is a positioning flight an operator must make anyway, sold at a discount to fill it. Villiers Jets says empty legs can be up to 50 percent cheaper, with fixed routes and limited flexibility. That is a broker’s own claim, not an independent average. The catch is that you take the date, time and airports the aircraft is already scheduled to fly. Our empty leg flights guide covers how listings work and what to check before you book.

2. Semi-Private and Per-Seat Flights

Per-seat flights sell individual seats on a scheduled-style private flight. JSX is the best-known example. According to Cranky Flier (Brett Snyder, August 2023), JSX works as a public charter: JetSuiteX, Inc. sells the flights, and an operating company, Delux Public Charter, LLC, flies them under Part 135 on aircraft of up to 30 seats. Part 380 of the federal regulations is what lets a public charter operator sell seats to the public. You pay a seat price rather than an hourly rate, and there is no empty leg to cover. Our semi-private flights guide compares the options by route.

3. Shared Charter: Splitting the Jet

Splitting one charter between two parties on the same route spreads the hourly cost. Villiers says on its site that cost-sharing savings can reach up to 75 percent. That is the company’s claim about its own service, and the saving depends on how many seats are filled and who you share with. Sharing means shared timing, so treat it as a trade of flexibility for price.

4. A Turboprop Instead of a Jet

A turboprop is the cheapest aircraft you can charter by the hour. Villiers lists turboprops at $1,800 to $3,000 per hour in 2026, against $2,500 to $4,500 for a light jet. The Pilatus PC-12 can seat up to nine passengers and has a listed maximum range of 1,765 nm, with a maximum cruise of 290 KTAS, per Pilatus. On trips under about 500 nm the speed penalty is small and the hourly saving is real. On longer trips the extra time claws the saving back.

5. A Smaller Jet With One Stop

A smaller jet that stops for fuel can cost less than a larger jet that flies non-stop. Acejet’s Teterboro to London page lists a fuel stop for light and midsize jets and a non-stop flight for super midsize and heavy jets, with a flight time of 7 hours 18 minutes for a light jet against 6 hours 38 minutes for a heavy. At Villiers’ 2026 rates, the light jet at $2,500 to $4,500 per hour versus the heavy at $8,000 to $15,000 shows how large the gap can be. Ask the broker to quote both a non-stop and a one-stop routing.

6. Flexible Dates and Off-Peak Days

Peak dates cost more. Global Charter says prices rise in summer and over Christmas, and that major events can add surcharges above €5,000. Moving a trip by a day or two away from a holiday or a big event can lower the quote, and it can turn up an empty leg that fits. If you can fly midweek, say so when you ask for quotes.

7. Round Trip Same Day vs Overnight vs Two One-Ways

A same-day round trip avoids waiting time and overnight crew costs. Global Charter says that when an aircraft waits on a multi-day trip, daily minimums and crew accommodation typically add several thousand euros per day. An overnight stay can cost more than a second one-way booked as a separate flight, because the aircraft can leave and serve another client. Ask the broker to price all three and compare the totals.

8. Secondary Airports

Landing, handling and parking fees are set by each airport, and busy private airports cost more. A smaller airport nearby can cut the ground cost and sometimes the wait. See our guide to what it costs to land a private plane at an airport for the fee types. Check the drive time: a cheaper airport is not cheaper if it adds an hour on the road.

9. Jet Cards for 25 or More Hours a Year

A jet card prepays a block of hours at a fixed rate. It is a saving only if you fly enough, and the break-even depends on the program. If you fly around 25 hours a year or more, it is worth pricing a card against ad hoc charter. See jet card cost for how programs price their hours.

What the Savings Look Like in Dollars

Using Villiers’ 2026 hourly ranges, a two-hour flight costs $3,600 to $6,000 in a turboprop and $5,000 to $9,000 in a light jet, before positioning. A heavy jet at $8,000 to $15,000 per hour comes to $16,000 to $30,000 for the same two hours. On a domestic trip, add the 7.5 percent federal excise tax and the $5.30 per passenger segment fee that NATA reports for 2026. That arithmetic is ours, not a quote: the hourly gap between a turboprop and a heavy jet is large enough that matching the aircraft to the trip saves more than any single discount on this list. A one-way trip also pays for some or all of the empty return flight, which is why an empty leg that matches your route is the one change that can beat all of them.

The Cheapest Private Jets to Charter

No broker publishes an hourly rate for each model, so the table uses the published category range as the closest figure. Models are grouped by category; a given aircraft can price above or below its category.

The Phenom 100 and Citation Mustang appear as examples of the very light class in Global Charter’s table, priced in euros and not converted here. The Cirrus Vision Jet is a single-engine jet with a listed maximum range of 1,275 nm and a maximum cruise of 317 KTAS, according to Cirrus. The other three jets differ in range as well as seats. Textron lists the current Citation M2 Gen3 with up to seven occupants and a 1,550 nm range. Aviation Week reports that the Phenom 100EV flies 1,194 nm with four passengers and NBAA IFR reserves. Honda’s own newsroom gives the HondaJet Elite II a range of 1,547 nm, and Aviation Week says Elite II seating rises to eight including the pilots. Those ranges assume four occupants and reserves, so a full cabin flies shorter, and a trip near the limit may need the fuel stop that a larger jet avoids. The light category is the broker’s label, not a manufacturer rating.

The Cheapest Private Jet to Buy

The cheapest new private jet is the Cirrus Vision Jet. Aviation Week reported the G3 at $3.68 million in March 2026. It is a single-engine jet, so insurance and operating costs differ from a twin. Cirrus lists up to seven seats and a 1,275 nm maximum range.

Used jets cost less to acquire. Older very light jets such as the Citation Mustang and the Eclipse 500 are the usual entry points, but a lower price comes with higher upkeep and older avionics. GlobalPlaneSearch’s market snapshot of 13 Citation Mustang listings showed asking prices from $1,850,000 to $2,500,000 and an average of $2,166,667, though several listings said “call for price” and the page carries no snapshot date. We could not open a current, dated source for Eclipse 500 asking prices, so we give no figure for it. For what ownership costs after purchase, see cost of owning a private jet. How to Compare Cheap Quotes Without Getting Burned

A cheap quote is only cheap if it is complete. Compare the same items across every quote.

Hidden Fees

Ask what the quote includes. Domestic charters carry a 7.5 percent federal excise tax and a segment fee of $5.30 per passenger per segment in 2026, per NATA citing IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32. Landing, handling, de-icing and catering are often separate. A low headline price that leaves these out can finish above a higher all-in quote. Our cost-to-land guide lists the airport items.

Operator Safety Checks

Price should not be the only filter. Ask which Part 135 operator will fly the trip and look it up in the FAA’s operator list. Ask whether the operator holds an ARGUS or Wyvern audit. For how the models compare on safety, see safest private jets in the world. A broker’s own name will not appear on the FAA’s list because brokers do not fly the aircraft.

A very low price is also the main warning sign of illegal charter. NBAA quotes the FAA’s own line, “If the price is too good to be true, it probably is,” and lists the tells: a provider that will not give you its air carrier certificate or air carrier number, separate invoices for aircraft use and pilot services, and no federal excise tax on the bill. NBAA warns that an insurer may refuse to cover a claim if it believes the flight was for compensation or hire. A saving of a few thousand dollars is not worth that exposure, so apply the check hardest to the cheapest quote.

Cancellation Terms on Empty Legs

Empty legs are priced low because the flight is already scheduled, and the schedule can change. Ask what happens if the operator moves or cancels the flight, and whether your payment is refunded in full. Get the terms in writing before you pay, and confirm the departure and arrival airports and times are fixed.

Two marketplaces and brokers carry the links on this page. Both are affiliate partners: Wijet may earn a commission, and the commission does not change the order of this list.

  • Private Jet Finder says its network includes “1000 qualified flight operators,” and it lets you search one-way, round-trip and multi-leg flights and request a quote. That is the company’s own claim.
  • Villiers Jets describes itself as a private jet charter broker and a technology platform, and says it gives access to more than 10,000 aircraft. That is also the company’s own claim.

For per-seat flights, JSX sells seats directly, without a broker. Other per-seat and shared-charter options exist; our semi-private flights guide lists them. For the full cost picture, read private jet charter cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest private jet?
The cheapest private jet to fly is a light or very light jet on a short trip, and the cheapest to buy new is the single-engine Cirrus Vision Jet. Aviation Week reported the G3 at $3.68 million in March 2026. For charter, a turboprop such as the Pilatus PC-12 costs less per hour than any jet.
How much is the cheapest private jet?
The cheapest private jet to charter costs around $2,500 per hour for a light jet and around $1,800 per hour for a turboprop, at 2026 Villiers Jets rates. To buy, the cheapest new jet is the Cirrus Vision Jet at a reported $3.68 million for the G3. Used jets cost less but add upkeep.
How does Luxaviation compare to VistaJet on price?
We found no comparable published hourly rates for Luxaviation and VistaJet, so a price comparison needs a quote from each. VistaJet says its Program is a flight-hour subscription at a fixed hourly rate with guaranteed availability. Ask both for an all-in price on the same route, dates and passenger count.
What is the cheapest way to fly private?
The cheapest way to fly private is a seat on a shared or per-seat flight, or an empty leg that matches your route and dates. Both are cheaper than chartering a whole jet at the hourly rate. If you need set dates, a turboprop or a smaller jet with one stop is usually next.
Are cheap private jet flights safe?
Cheap private jet flights are as safe as the operator that flies them, not the price. Check that the aircraft is on a Part 135 operator's FAA certificate and ask the broker for the safety audit the operator holds, such as ARGUS or Wyvern. A quote far below the market is a reason to ask more questions.
