Does Leonardo DiCaprio have a private jet? We found no aircraft registered to him in the FAA database. He is, however, regularly named in discussions of celebrity private flights and climate, and that is a different question from who owns what.

Below: what the registry shows, why an actor at his level is unlikely to appear on it, how the climate criticism is made and answered, and what a flight from Los Angeles to the French Riviera costs on a large jet.

The short answer

We found no aircraft registered to Leonardo DiCaprio in the FAA database. That does not prove he has never owned one, because owners often register through LLCs and trusts. Public criticism of his private flights exists, but it is not evidence of a particular aircraft or owner.

Does Leonardo DiCaprio have a private jet?

On November 6, 2026 we searched the FAA aircraft registry for the owner names “DiCaprio” and “DiCaprio Leonardo”. Neither search returned an aircraft.

Registry silence has limits. A person who wants privacy can register an aircraft through a limited liability company or a trust, in which case the record shows the entity’s name, not the person’s. A search by personal name cannot see that. So we say what we found, and we do not say that he has no jet.

We also did not find any outlet that names a specific aircraft as his. Claims online that he owns a Global Express cite no source, so we do not repeat them.

Chartering vs owning: why A-list actors rarely put a jet in their own name

Even if an actor flies private often, owning the aircraft is rarely the most efficient way to do it. A large jet carries fixed costs whether it flies or not, including crew, hangar space, insurance and maintenance. Our guide to the cost of owning a private jet walks through how those add up, and why the break-even point sits at a level of flying most people never reach.

Three ways to fly private without owning

  • Charter: you pay for each trip on an aircraft someone else operates. It is the simplest route and requires no commitment. See private jet charter.
  • Fractional ownership or a jet card: you buy hours or a share of an aircraft in a managed program. Our NetJets cost guide explains how that model is priced.
  • Owning through an entity: some owners hold a jet in an LLC or a trust for liability and privacy reasons, often with a management company that also charters it out to others.

None of these tells you what any particular celebrity does. They explain why a registry search for a name so often comes back empty, even for people who fly private regularly.

The climate critique, fairly put

DiCaprio has long been associated with environmental advocacy and founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which is part of why his name comes up in this debate. That combination, a high-profile climate advocate who flies private, is what makes the criticism sharp.

The best-known example dates to May 2016. Maxim, crediting Page Six, reported on May 23, 2016 that he flew by private jet from Cannes to New York to accept an environmental award and then back to France for the amfAR gala, about 8,000 miles in total. The report says nothing about who owned or operated the aircraft, which is why it does not change the registry finding. For a defender of celebrity private flying, see our page on Joe Rogan’s private jet.

The critics’ case is that a private flight emits far more per passenger than a seat on a scheduled airline, and that public figures who speak about climate are held to a higher standard. The defenders’ case is that individual flights are a small part of total emissions, that a person’s advocacy work and donations should count, and that the trip is sometimes unavoidable for work. We do not put numbers on this page, because we found no verified emissions data tied to his flights. For the activist side of the debate, see Greta Thunberg’s page and our page on Taylor Swift’s private jet.

What a Los Angeles to Cannes private flight costs

The nearest major airport to Cannes is Nice Cote d’Azur, a short drive away. A great-circle (haversine) calculation from the two airports’ published coordinates puts Los Angeles International to Nice at about 5,280 nautical miles (about 9,780 km).

That distance is well beyond a midsize jet, so a nonstop trip needs a large-cabin, long-range aircraft. Our ranking of the longest range private jets lists the models that can do it in one hop. Charter pricing is based on flight hours plus positioning and fees, and the total depends heavily on the aircraft and the dates; our private jet charter cost guide explains how a quote is built. We do not quote an hourly rate here because it would be a guess.

How we checked

On November 6, 2026 we searched the FAA aircraft registry by owner name for “DiCaprio” and “DiCaprio Leonardo” and found no aircraft. We looked for any named outlet linking a specific aircraft to him and found none. The 2016 Cannes flights come from Maxim’s May 23, 2016 report, which credits Page Six. A personal-name search cannot see an LLC or trust, so our conclusion is “not confirmed” and not “he has no jet”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Leonardo DiCaprio own a private jet?
We found no aircraft registered to him in the FAA database under his surname or full name. That does not prove he has never owned one, since owners often register through LLCs and trusts. We also found no outlet naming a specific aircraft as his.
Does Leonardo DiCaprio fly private?
He is regularly named in coverage of celebrity private flights, including a 2016 Page Six report, carried by Maxim, of private flights between Cannes and New York. That is not evidence of a specific aircraft. Flying private can mean charter, a jet card or a borrowed aircraft, none of which show up on a registry.
Why is DiCaprio criticized for private jets?
Because he is a prominent climate advocate, and a private flight emits far more per passenger than a seat on a scheduled airline. Critics see a gap between message and behavior. Defenders point to his advocacy work and say individual flights are a small share of emissions.
