Private jets need roughly 2,000 ft to 6,000 ft of runway to take off, depending on the model. The smallest jets sit near the bottom, with the Cirrus Vision Jet G3 listed at 1,910 ft. The biggest long-range jets, including the Bombardier Global 8000 and the Gulfstream G700, are listed at 5,760 ft and 5,995 ft at maximum takeoff weight, sea level, standard day.

Takeoff Distance by Jet

These figures come from the manufacturer pages we opened on November 6, 2026. Some pages say the figure is at maximum takeoff weight, sea level, ISA (standard day). Others, such as Textron’s, do not state the conditions, and we mark that.

The table has 14 models. The G650 figure is at its 99,600 lb maximum takeoff weight and the G650ER figure at 103,600 lb, per Aviation Week, so the two are not at the same weight. We list only jets whose figures we could read at a named source.

Two reading notes. First, a takeoff distance listed on a spec page is a best-case figure. Second, the landing distances are not comparable across makers unless the conditions match, because landing distance depends on whether a maker applies a safety margin.

What Changes the Runway a Jet Needs

Weight

A heavier jet needs more speed to lift off, so it uses more runway. A jet carrying a full fuel load for a long trip needs more runway than the same jet flying a short hop with a few passengers. Spec-page takeoff distances assume maximum takeoff weight, so for many real flights the runway needed is shorter than the table.

Elevation and temperature

Thin air reduces both engine thrust and wing lift. Pilots describe this as density altitude, which combines the airport’s elevation with the temperature and pressure of the day. A hot afternoon at a high airport can feel to the jet like a much higher elevation. Airports in the mountains, such as Aspen and Telluride, are known for this. AirNav lists Aspen’s Runway 15/33 at 8,006 ft with an airport elevation of 7,837.9 ft, and Telluride’s Runway 9/27 at 7,111 ft with an airport elevation of 9,069.7 ft. Compare that with Teterboro, at about 8 ft.

We do not give a “feet per 2,000 ft of elevation” rule of thumb because we could not source it. Use the airplane flight manual for the specific jet.

Wet or contaminated runway

Water, snow or slush on the runway lengthens the stopping distance, so required landing runway grows. The FAA’s Safety Alert for Operators 19003, “Turbojet Braking Performance on Wet Runways,” says that 30 to 40 percent of additional stopping distance may be required if a runway transitions from wet to contaminated by more than 1/8 inch of water.

Operating rules: Part 135 landing distance margins

Charter flights are flown under 14 CFR Part 135, which has a safety margin built in. Section 135.385 requires that a turbine-engine airplane be able to make a full-stop landing within 60 percent of the effective length of each runway, measured from 50 ft above the point where the obstruction clearance plane meets the runway (eCFR 14 CFR 135.385, via Cornell Legal Information Institute). In practice, that means a charter jet needs a runway noticeably longer than the landing distance on its spec page. Our page on the cost to land a private plane at an airport covers what happens at the other end.

Balanced Field Length vs Takeoff Distance

Two terms get mixed up. Takeoff distance is the distance a jet needs to get airborne and climb to a height above the runway, with all engines working. Balanced field length is the distance that also lets the jet either stop safely or continue the takeoff if an engine fails at the decision speed. The balanced field length is never shorter than the all-engines distance, and it is what pilots plan around for safety.

Under 14 CFR 25.109, the accelerate-stop distance covers accelerating to a failure speed, rejecting the takeoff and coming to a full stop (Cornell LII).

When a manufacturer lists “takeoff field length,” it is usually this second kind of figure. When a page lists only “takeoff distance,” read its footnotes to see which one it means.

Runway length at the airport matters as much as the jet. AirNav lists the longest runways at five well-known private jet airports:

AirportLongest runwayElevation
Teterboro, NJ (KTEB)6,997 ft (Runway 1/19)about 8 ft
Van Nuys, CA (KVNY)8,001 ft (Runway 16R/34L)802.1 ft
Aspen, CO (KASE)8,006 ft (Runway 15/33)7,837.9 ft
Telluride, CO (KTEX)7,111 ft (Runway 9/27)9,069.7 ft
Nantucket, MA (KACK)6,303 ft (Runway 6/24)46.8 ft

Every jet in our table lists a standard-day sea-level takeoff distance below the longest runway at each of these airports. Elevation and heat change that picture, which is why the mountain airports need the airplane flight manual and not the spec page. Nantucket’s longest runway, 6,303 ft, is barely longer than the 6,299 ft the G650ER lists at maximum weight, which shows why weight and conditions matter.

How Much Runway Does a 747 Need?

Boeing publishes the 747-8’s takeoff runway requirements as graphs in section 3.3 of its “747-8 Airplane Characteristics for Airport Planning” (Rev E, January 2026). The graphs plot required runway length against takeoff weight, airport elevation and temperature, so there is no single number, and we do not read one off a chart for you. The point for a private jet owner is that Boeing prices the answer by weight and conditions, as the manufacturers of business jets do. For scale, the G700 and Global 8000 are listed near 6,000 ft by their manufacturers.

For the smallest jets and how they compare, see the smallest private jets in the world. For the price and specs of a long-range Gulfstream, see Gulfstream G650 price, and for altitude limits, see how high a private jet flies. If a midsize jet is on your list, read best midsize private jets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a runway need to be for a private jet?
Roughly 2,000 to 6,000 ft, depending on the jet. Manufacturers list 1,910 ft for the Vision Jet G3 and about 5,995 ft for the Gulfstream G700 at maximum weight. Charter rules add a margin on landing, so plan on more.
What is the minimum runway length for small planes?
It depends on the aircraft. Among jets, the Cirrus Vision Jet G3 lists a takeoff distance of 1,910 ft on its maker's page. Piston and turboprop planes vary, and we have not sourced figures for them here.
How much runway does a Gulfstream G650 need?
Aviation Week lists a takeoff distance of 5,858 ft for the G650 and 6,299 ft for the G650ER at maximum takeoff weight, sea level, standard day. For the newer G700, Gulfstream lists 5,995 ft.
How much land do you need for a private runway?
A private runway for a jet needs at least the jet's takeoff and landing distances plus safety margins, and the length grows with elevation and heat. Regulations on private airstrips vary by state, so check with your state aviation authority.
How much runway does a 747 need?
Boeing publishes the 747-8's requirement as graphs by weight, elevation and temperature in its airport planning document, not as one number. It is a much heavier aircraft than any private jet in our table, so check those graphs for your conditions.
