The best midsize private jets are the Cessna Citation Latitude and Embraer Praetor 500 for most buyers and charterers, and the Challenger 3500, Praetor 600 and Gulfstream G280 once you need real transcontinental reach with a margin. Midsize jets typically carry about seven to nine passengers over roughly 1,500 to 3,300 nautical miles, most with a standing cabin. Super midsize jets add range toward 4,000 nm and a bigger cabin. Air Charter Advisors estimates a Challenger 350 at $6,500 to $8,500 per flight hour on 2026 market data, before taxes and fees.
This guide ranks nine models, explains what “midsize” actually means (it is an industry habit, not a rule), and lays the specs and reported prices side by side. It also covers what midsize jet charter costs and how to pick between them.
What Counts as a Midsize Private Jet
There is no regulatory definition of a midsize jet. The categories are an industry convention, used by manufacturers, brokers and charter operators, and they overlap at the edges.
AIN said as much in an April 2008 article on business jet categories, when it chose cabin volume as the chief attribute for its own cutoffs and used weight, range and price only to refine them. Brokers also label the same aircraft differently, and the Challenger 350 is one jet that some operators call a super midsize and others a large midsize.
| Category | Passengers | Range | Cabin height | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Midsize | About 7 to 9 | About 1,500 to 3,300 nm | About 5.7 to 6 ft | Citation XLS, Latitude, Praetor 500 |
| Super midsize | About 8 to 10 | About 3,300 to 4,000 nm | About 6 to 6.25 ft | Challenger 3500, Longitude, Praetor 600, G280 |
The ranges above come from the figures in the sections below. Heavy and large jets sit in a different class and a different price bracket. A Gulfstream G700 or a Falcon 8X is an ultra-long-range jet, not a midsize jet, and it is covered in our guide to the longest range private jets. Range figures also depend on assumptions: manufacturers quote range with four passengers and reserves, and a full cabin shortens it.
Best Midsize Jets
1. Cessna Citation Latitude
The most balanced midsize jet. Textron’s brochure lists a four-passenger range of 2,700 nm and describes a cabin with six feet of stand-up room. Private Jet Card Comparisons lists up to nine passengers, a cabin height of 6 feet and a new price of $19.5 million, with pre-owned examples around $14.9 million. It lists FAA certification in June 2015.
The Latitude’s draw is the combination of a stand-up cabin and a range that handles most US city pairs. Some pages quote a lower range (2,455 nm on one listing) because they use a full-cabin basis, so always ask which basis a figure uses.
- Range: 2,700 nm with four passengers (Textron brochure)
- Cabin height: about 6 ft
- Reported list price: about $19.5M (Private Jet Card Comparisons)
2. Cessna Citation XLS Gen2
The lowest entry price on this list for shorter trips. The XLS family has been in production since 2004, according to Private Jet Card Comparisons, which lists a range of 1,539 nm, up to eight passengers, a cabin height of 5.7 feet and a maximum speed of 433 knots. It lists a new price of $15 million and pre-owned examples from about $4.5 million to $4.9 million.
That page covers the XLS family and does not break out the Gen2 upgrade, so we use its figures as a baseline and not as the Gen2’s official specification. Textron does not publish a price on its site.
- Range: about 1,539 nm
- Cabin height: about 5.7 ft
- Reported list price: about $15M (Private Jet Card Comparisons)
3. Embraer Praetor 500
The longest-range jet in the true midsize class. Embraer lists a range of 3,340 nm for the Praetor 500, assuming long-range cruise with four passengers, NBAA IFR reserves and a 200-nm alternate. The cabin height is 6 feet and the maximum operating speed is Mach 0.83. Private Jet Card Comparisons lists a new price of $18.4 million and a pre-owned figure of $17.4 million.
Embraer launched the Praetor 500 and 600 in October 2018 as the successors to the Legacy 450 and 500, according to Aviation Week’s aircraft overview. If you see a “Legacy 500” for sale, it is the earlier model.
- Range: 3,340 nm (Embraer)
- Cabin height: 6 ft
- Reported list price: about $18.4M (Private Jet Card Comparisons)
4. Learjet 75 (Out of Production, Used)
A fast, compact jet you can only buy used. Bombardier announced in February 2021 that it would end Learjet production, and the last production Learjet, a Learjet 75, was delivered on March 28, 2022, according to AIN. Private Jet Card Comparisons lists the 75 as built from 2013 to 2021, with a range of about 2,040 nm, a cabin height of 4.92 feet and a maximum speed of 465 knots. Its page lists a former new price of $14.5 million and pre-owned prices that range from $6.8 million to “from $12 million” on different parts of the page.
The cabin is the trade-off. At under five feet high, it is a seated cabin, not a standing one.
- Range: about 2,040 nm
- Cabin height: about 4.9 ft
- Status: out of production, used only (AIN)
5. Hawker 850XP (Used)
A cabin-for-the-money used option. Hawker business jets are no longer built. Private Jet Card Comparisons lists the 850XP with up to eight passengers, a cabin height of 5.75 feet, a maximum operating speed of 452 knots and a range of about 2,405 to 2,525 nm, with different figures on different parts of its page. It lists pre-owned prices from about $2 million to $3.85 million.
With a purchase price that low, the cost to own and run an older jet matters more than the price. See our cost of owning a private jet guide.
- Range: about 2,400 to 2,500 nm
- Cabin height: about 5.75 ft
- Used price: about $2M to $3.85M (Private Jet Card Comparisons)
Best Super Midsize Jets
1. Bombardier Challenger 3500
The widest cabin of the three AvBuyer compared. AvBuyer’s September 2023 comparison lists a range of 3,377 nm from Wichita with four passengers and a new price of $27.2 million, and says the Challenger 3500 offers the widest cabin of the three jets it compared. Private Jet Card Comparisons lists a cabin height of 6.08 feet, up to nine passengers and a speed of 459 knots cruise.
- Range: about 3,377 nm (AvBuyer, 2023)
- Cabin height: about 6.08 ft
- Reported list price: $27.2M (AvBuyer, 2023)
2. Cessna Citation Longitude
The longest-range Citation in this lineup. AvBuyer lists a range of 3,500 nm, eight seats in a typical executive layout and a new price of $29.995 million in 2023. Private Jet Card Comparisons lists a cabin height of 6 feet and a speed of 476 knots, and an FAA certification date of September 2019.
- Range: about 3,500 nm (AvBuyer, 2023)
- Cabin height: about 6 ft
- Reported list price: $29.995M (AvBuyer, 2023)
3. Embraer Praetor 600
The longest range in this lineup. Embraer lists 4,018 nm for the Praetor 600 on the same basis as the Praetor 500, with a 6-foot cabin height and a maximum operating altitude of 45,000 feet. Private Jet Card Comparisons lists a new price of about $24.5 million and cites up to nine passengers, while Embraer’s page promotes up to 12.
- Range: 4,018 nm (Embraer)
- Cabin height: 6 ft
- Reported list price: about $24.5M (Private Jet Card Comparisons)
4. Gulfstream G280
The longest range and lowest price of AvBuyer’s three. AvBuyer lists a range of 3,703 nm from Wichita with four passengers and a new price of $24.5 million in 2023, and says the G280 has the highest variable cost of the three jets it compared, at $6.66 per nautical mile against $6.27 for the Challenger 3500 and $6.62 for the Longitude. Private Jet Card Comparisons lists a cabin height of about 6.25 feet and pre-owned examples around $16.1 million.
The G280 is not to be confused with the earlier Gulfstream G200, a different aircraft. Gulfstream built 250 G200s before the last one rolled off the production line on December 19, 2011, according to Aviation Today.
- Range: about 3,703 nm (AvBuyer, 2023)
- Cabin height: about 6.25 ft
- Reported list price: $24.5M (AvBuyer, 2023)

PJCC is Private Jet Card Comparisons. List prices are reported prices, around the year shown, and the actual price depends on configuration. Private Jet Card Comparisons does not date every figure, so treat its prices as a guide. The used ranges for the Learjet 75 and the Hawker 850XP are not from a dated marketplace snapshot, so check live listings before you rely on them.
Midsize Jet Charter: What It Costs
Midsize jet charter is the most common way to fly this class, because you pay only for the hours you use. Air Charter Advisors, a broker, estimates the Challenger 350 at $6,500 to $8,500 per flight hour, based on 2026 market data. Its estimate excludes taxes, de-icing, landing and handling fees, international surcharges, overnight crew expenses and premium catering. Quotes from other brokers differ because they bundle different things, so compare what each one includes.
Two things change the price more than the aircraft. First, the trip itself: a one-way flight pricing in the empty return leg, and positioning fees when the jet starts far away. Second, availability: popular routes and peak days cost more. For a full breakdown, read our private jet charter cost guide and try the charter cost estimator.
A typical coast-to-coast trip is the case that separates the classes. Textron describes the Latitude’s 2,700 nm range as transcontinental, and that figure assumes four passengers and a long-range cruise. With a full cabin, headwinds and reserves, a stop can become likely. Super midsize jets give more margin, which is the reason many charter customers pay more for them on long routes.
How to Pick Between Them
Start with your trips, not with the aircraft.
Range. Work out the longest trip you fly regularly and add a margin. A midsize jet with 2,700 nm of range is comfortable at 2,000 nm, and tight at 2,600.
Runway. Shorter runways rule out some jets. Read our guide on how much runway a private jet needs before you assume a jet can use your home airport.
Cabin. If you stand up in the cabin, you want 6 feet. The Latitude, Praetor 500 and the super midsize jets all offer it, while the Learjet 75 and older Hawkers do not.
Operating cost. The purchase price is the smaller number. Fuel, crew, maintenance, hangar and insurance add up every year, and AvBuyer’s variable cost figures show how close the super midsize jets are per nautical mile. Our cost of owning a private jet guide has the detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best midsize private jet?
- The Cessna Citation Latitude is the best-balanced midsize jet for most people, with a 6-foot cabin and a 2,700 nm four-passenger range per Textron. The Embraer Praetor 500, at 3,340 nm per Embraer, is the pick when you need more range.
- What is the difference between a midsize and a super midsize jet?
- A super midsize jet has more range, typically about 3,300 to 4,000 nm against roughly 1,500 to 3,300 nm, and a slightly bigger cabin. There is no regulatory definition, so the line is an industry convention that varies by source.
- How much does a midsize jet charter cost per hour?
- Air Charter Advisors estimates a Challenger 350 at $6,500 to $8,500 per flight hour on 2026 market data, before taxes and fees. Smaller midsize jets cost less per hour. The spread reflects what the quote includes, the aircraft and the route, so ask for an all-in price for your trip.
- How much does a mid size private jet cost to buy?
- New midsize jets are reported around $15 million for a Citation XLS to $19.5 million for a Latitude, per Private Jet Card Comparisons. Used examples run far lower, from a few million for older Hawkers to about $15 million for a used Latitude.
- Can a midsize jet fly coast to coast nonstop?
- Often, but not always. Textron calls the Latitude's 2,700 nm range transcontinental on a four-passenger basis. A full cabin, headwinds and reserves can force a fuel stop, which is why super midsize jets are the safer choice for regular coast-to-coast flights.
