The fastest private jet you can buy today is the Bombardier Global 8000, with a top speed of Mach 0.95 according to Bombardier’s own specification page. The first aircraft entered service in December 2025, and Bombardier calls it the fastest civil aircraft since the Concorde. Behind it sit the Gulfstream G700 and G800 at Mach 0.935.

That answers the headline, but “fastest” hides three different numbers: the speed a jet is allowed to touch, the speed it flies when someone is in a hurry, and the speed it flies on a normal day. This guide ranks the fastest business jets by top speed, explains the difference, and covers light jets, where speed matters for a very different reason.

Fastest Private Jets Ranked by Max Operating Speed

Max operating speed, written Mmo, is the limit the manufacturer certifies. It is the number brochures lead with, and the number the “fastest” ranking is built on. The table below uses the manufacturers’ own specification pages (Bombardier, Gulfstream, Dassault, Textron Aviation) as read in November 2026.

The Falcon 10X is not in service. Business Jet Traveler reported in July 2026 that it made its first flight on June 19, 2026, and that Dassault chairman and CEO Éric Trappier said at the company’s half-year results that entry into service had moved to 2029. For the Citation X+, AOPA Pilot lists its maximum operating speed at Mach 0.935 and a high-speed cruise of 524 ktas, while Business Jet Traveler gives 528 ktas. Textron ended production in 2018 after delivering 29 aircraft since the 2014 refresh, per Business Jet Traveler.

Range figures are the manufacturers’ theoretical numbers: NBAA IFR reserves, Mach 0.85 and a light passenger load (eight passengers and four crew in the Bombardier and Gulfstream notes). Flown at high-speed cruise, the range drops. Gulfstream lists the G700 at 6,650 nm at Mach 0.90, against 7,750 nm at Mach 0.85.

1. Bombardier Global 8000

The fastest purpose-built business jet, and the one that holds the top spot.

Bombardier lists a top speed of Mach 0.95, an ultra-high speed cruise of Mach 0.92 and a typical cruise of Mach 0.85. Range is 8,000 nm, up to 19 passengers, and a maximum operating altitude of 51,000 ft.

Bombardier’s press release of December 8, 2025 marked the first delivery at its Mississauga assembly center and described the aircraft as the fastest civil aircraft since the Concorde. That is the manufacturer’s framing, but the Mach 0.95 figure is on its specification page.

  • Top speed: Mach 0.95
  • Range: 8,000 nm (theoretical)
  • Takeoff distance at maximum weight: 5,760 ft (Bombardier spec page)

2. Gulfstream G700

Gulfstream’s flagship, tied with the G800 as its fastest jet.

Gulfstream lists a maximum operating speed of Mach 0.935, a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.90 and a range of 7,750 nm. The FAA granted type certification on March 29, 2024, as General Dynamics announced the same day. Our G700 price guide covers what it costs to buy.

  • Top speed: Mach 0.935
  • Range: 7,750 nm at Mach 0.85; 6,650 nm at Mach 0.90
  • Certified: March 2024

3. Gulfstream G800

The longer-range sibling that shares the G700’s top speed.

Gulfstream’s page for the G800 lists Mach 0.935 and a range of 8,200 nm, on the same theoretical basis as the G700. That makes it the longest-range Gulfstream on this list at the same top speed.

  • Top speed: Mach 0.935
  • High-speed cruise: Mach 0.90
  • Range: 8,200 nm (theoretical)

4. Cessna Citation X+

The fastest Cessna ever built, and no longer made.

Textron Aviation announced in June 2018 that it would cease production of the Citation X+, ending a run of more than 21 years for the X family, according to Aviation International News. AOPA Pilot lists its maximum operating speed at Mach 0.935, the same as the G700. Because it is out of production, you can only buy one pre-owned.

  • Top speed: Mach 0.935 (AOPA Pilot)
  • Production: ended 2018
  • Buy it: pre-owned only

5. Dassault Falcon 10X

A large-cabin Falcon aimed at the same long-range buyer.

Dassault’s specification page lists a maximum operating Mach number of 0.925 and a range of 7,500 nm with eight passengers and NBAA IFR reserves. The aircraft is not certified: Business Jet Traveler reported in July 2026 that it first flew on June 19, 2026, and that Dassault’s chairman and CEO now points to entry into service in 2029. It is a model to watch, not one you can charter today.

  • Top speed: Mach 0.925
  • Range: 7,500 nm
  • Status: in flight test; entry into service targeted for 2029 (Business Jet Traveler)

How Fast Is a Private Jet?

A private jet cruises at roughly Mach 0.80 to 0.90 if it is a large-cabin model, and at roughly 400 to 450 knots if it is a light jet. The figures below are manufacturer examples, not category averages.

Light Jets

Light jets cruise at around 420 to 450 knots true airspeed. The HondaJet Elite II is rated at 422 KTAS at FL300 and a 1,547 nm range with four occupants, according to Honda’s performance page. The Textron Citation CJ4 Gen3 lists a maximum cruise of 451 ktas and a range of 2,165 nm. The Embraer Phenom 300E is listed at a 464 knot high-speed cruise and a 2,010 nm range.

A knot is about 1.15 mph, so 450 knots is roughly 518 mph. That is faster than most travelers assume for a small jet, though slower than a large cabin at altitude.

Midsize and Super-Midsize Jets

The Challenger 3500 is the midsize example here: Bombardier lists a top speed of Mach 0.83 and a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.82, with a range of 3,400 nm. These jets trade a few tenths of Mach for lower purchase and operating costs, which our Bombardier price list shows.

Large and Ultra-Long-Range Jets

Large-cabin jets from Bombardier and Gulfstream cruise at Mach 0.85 to 0.90 depending on how much range the operator wants to keep. The extra speed costs fuel. Gulfstream’s own G700 figures show the trade: 1,100 nm less range at Mach 0.90 than at Mach 0.85.

Max Speed vs Cruise Speed vs Mach Explained

Mach is speed measured against the speed of sound, which falls as air gets colder. Because the air is colder at altitude, Mach 0.85 at 45,000 ft is slower in true airspeed than Mach 0.85 near sea level. Big jets that cruise high quote Mach; light jets usually quote knots of true airspeed.

Max Operating Speed (Mmo)

Mmo is a certified ceiling. Pilots stay under it, and flying at it burns fuel quickly. Bombardier’s Global 8000 has a top speed of Mach 0.95 but a typical cruise of Mach 0.85.

High-Speed Cruise and Long-Range Cruise

High-speed cruise is a power setting, and long-range cruise is the economical one. The gap is visible in the manufacturers’ tables: the Global 8000 lists Mach 0.90 for high-speed cruise and Mach 0.85 for typical cruise.

Why Owners Rarely Fly at Max Speed

Flying faster uses more fuel and shortens range, and the time saved on a trip is small. On a flight of 3,000 nm, a difference of 0.05 Mach is roughly 20 to 30 minutes by simple arithmetic, which is rarely worth the fuel on its own. Operators choose speed to fit the schedule, not the brochure.

Fastest Light and Personal Jets

If you want speed in a small jet, the choice is among the HondaJet Elite II, the Citation CJ4 Gen3 and the Phenom 300E. On published numbers:

  • HondaJet Elite II: 422 KTAS at FL300, 1,547 nm (Honda performance page)
  • Citation CJ4 Gen3: 451 ktas maximum cruise, 2,165 nm (Textron Aviation)
  • Phenom 300E: 464 knot high-speed cruise and 2,010 nm range with five occupants and NBAA IFR reserves, per an Embraer release of February 2026. The earlier Phenom 300 figures were 453 knots and 1,971 nm, and some listings still pair those older numbers with the 300E. Embraer calls the 300E the fastest light jet, which is the company’s own claim

The CJ4 Gen3 figures come from Textron Aviation’s product page, which also says the aircraft is progressing toward FAA certification, so treat them as expected values until certification is complete.

Light jets also use shorter runways, which opens more airports. Our guide to how much runway a private jet needs covers that.

Supersonic Private Jets: Where Things Stand

There is no supersonic private jet you can buy or charter. The projects below show how far the idea has come.

Aerion

Aerion Supersonic shut down on May 21, 2021, saying it could not raise the capital to begin producing its AS2, according to CNBC. The aircraft never flew. Reporting at the time said Aerion had been aiming for a first flight by 2024.

Boom Overture

Boom’s Overture is a 64 to 80 seat airliner program, not a private jet, and it has not entered service.

Spike S-512

Spike Aerospace’s S-512 supersonic business jet has never been built or flown. In 2025 its founder revived the design, according to AIN. We found no official schedule.

Fastest Jet for Your Money

Speed is the most expensive spec. The Global 8000 and G700 sit at the top of the price range for new jets, and our guides cover what a Gulfstream G700 costs and the Bombardier price list. If your trips are 2,000 nm or less, a midsize jet gets you there in a similar time for a fraction of the price, because the gap between Mach 0.80 and Mach 0.90 on a short leg is a few minutes.
